After putting together another Broadway flop, down-on-his-luck Producer Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) teams up with timid accountant Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) in a get-rich-quick scheme to put on the world’s worst show in this satirical comedy that was later remade by writer/director Mel Brooks as an acclaimed Broadway stage musical of the same name.
The film was Brooks’s directorial debut, and he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Decades later, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry and placed eleventh on the AFI’s “100 Years…100 Laughs” list.
